Principal's Message

Dr. Lori Roger is Laurelwood Elementary School’s Principal.

Welcome to the 2020-21 school year at Laurelwood Elementary, a California Distinguished School!   This has been a year unlike all other school years.  We will begin school on August 17, 2020, in Distance Learning.

On behalf of our teachers and staff, we are delighted to have you join us online. Laurelwood is a wonderful community school situated in “Birdland” and including residents of Santa Clara, Sunnyvale and Cupertino.

We believe in educating the “whole child” with attention to both social/emotional development, academic outcomes and inclusion of visual and performing arts (funded by your generous donations to PTA).

During the 2020-21 school year, our staff will focus on four goals outlined in the Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA).

  • Goal 1:  Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)
  • Goal 2:  English language development for English learners
  • Goal 3:  Positive School Climate
  • Goal 4:  Writing Across the Curriculum

SPSA goals are updated annually and determined by our School Leadership Team (SLT) along with approval from School Site Council (SSC) comprised of 50% parents and 50% staff.  School Site Council members for 2020-21 include:

Principal: Dr. Lori Rogers, Teacher: Tia Keeth, Teacher: Ryann Mazzuco, Teacher: Open, Classified: Carlos Garcia and Chairperson:  Kristi Gradwohl, Parent: Reemu Mehta, Parent:  Mary Ciccotto, Parent: Open

Our Board of Trustees approved a bond funded series of projects recently completed by the Bond Department showcasing your tax dollars at work:

  • New security fencing - 2020
  • Kindergarten play structure - 2019
  • Primary play structure - 2019
  • Upper grade play structure - 2019
  • Air conditioning, lighting, carpeting, WiFi - 2017-18
  • New furniture and school office upgrades - 2019

I am beginning my sixth year as principal of Laurelwood and my 35th year in elementary education.  I am an Arizona native and spent 29 years working in Southern California public schools prior to joining SCUSD.  I have served as a teacher of first through sixth grades, a middle school reading specialist, a district level English language arts coordinator, a vice principal and an elementary school principal for 12 years. I am a proud graduate of University of Southern California (USC) where both of my adult daughters also attended - one in astronautical engineering and one completing her PhD in English. I’m honored to serve at Laurelwood Elementary and I look forward to meeting you and your child when it becomes safe to meet in person.

Please get involved by joining our Parent Teacher Association (PTA) headed by President: Janet Hazen.  Other opportunities to get involved include: Project Cornerstone and School Site Council which will be virtual this year.  Thank you for trusting us to educate your child.  It is our privilege to do so!
