SCUSD KINDERGARTEN PROGRAM: Beginning the Journey to Success

Program
The Santa Clara Unified School District implements a full day Kindergarten program. The Kindergarten schedule follows the current schedule for Grades 1 and 2. The Kindergarten teachers believe that a full day allows students to participate in a program that integrates the core curriculum with activities that are developmentally appropriate for children. It also provides more time to allow students to explore and experience music, drama, movement, art, science and social studies in a creative and relaxed environment. A flexible day allows for academic learning and quiet, restful times as needed. Class size in Kindergarten is 20 students, the same size as Grades 1-3.

Options
We recognize that some families may feel a full day Kindergarten program will not meet the needs of their child. Parents shall have the option of having their child attend the full day (the primary grade schedule) or a partial day (leaving just before lunch). Parents will have an opportunity to indicate their selection of the Full Day Option or Partial Day Option upon request. This form should be completed at the time of registration. Parents who wish to select the partial day option will be asked to meet with the teacher to clarify their selection and options.

Conditions
The full day Kindergarten program will have some impact on service. Students will receive an integrated curriculum throughout the day. Students who attend partial day will not receive instruction that occurs in the afternoon. Kindergarten students who remain for the full day will eat lunch at school and may buy or bring lunch.

Changing the Option
Parents will have an opportunity to change their option at the end of the trimesters. Parents who wish to change to the partial option will be asked to meet with the principal and/or teacher.

Commitment
Once parents have made a selection, it will be the parents'responsibility to ensure that the student is in attendance daily according to the option selected.

Background
The recommendation to implement a full day Kindergarten is the result of extensive study and discussion among all district Kindergarten teachers and elementary principals, district staff, and parents of Kindergarten students. The decision to implement a full day Kindergarten program also involved a thorough examination of relevant data from other states and other schools about the effects of full day Kindergarten on student performance.

Kindergarten FAQs

How do I know if my child is ready for kindergarten?
We accept each child where he or she is.  Some students are reading before they start kindergarten; others learn letters and sounds in kindergarten and start reading at the end of kindergarten or in first grade.  Some can count to 20 in the fall; others can barely count to 2.  That said kindergarten is more academic now than it was a few years ago. While still recognizing that children learn through play, kindergarten now is less like preschool than it used to be in focus or intent.  Parents of students with late fall birthdays need to look carefully at their child’s readiness for this more challenging and academic environment.  Many parents of children with fall birthdays opt to wait a year before starting their child in kindergarten.  Your child’s overall maturity and readiness to learn makes a big difference in their successfully mastering the standards set for kindergarten.

What will my child need to know or be able to do?
Again, by law we must accept every child legally old enough to attend; there are no other requirements.  However, to get the most out of kindergarten, it is very helpful if your child is able to:
-Sit with a group and listen for 10-15 minutes,
-Take turns talking in a group (speaking and listening),
-Recognize his/her first name when printed in upper and lower case letters,
-Recognize many other upper case letters,
-Be familiar with books (knowing front from back, turning pages in order, using pictures to understand the story, etc.)
-Count to ten out loud, and count objects accurately up to five,
-Recognize some basic colors,
-Talk with an adult outside of the family.

How do I know if my child is enrolled?

If you live in our attendance area and register during the month of January, your child will have a spot. You will need to show proof of residency with a current bill again in August. If you are accepted under Open Enrollment and register by the deadline you were given, assume that you have a spot. (The law allows us to transfer Open Enrollment students to their home school within three days of the opening of school if we experience a surge of neighborhood enrollment when school starts in the fall.) If you live in our attendance area and register late, we may be filled and you will be overloaded to another school until a post opens. In the past, we have had places for all kindergarten students in our attendance area and a few on the Open Enrollment list. Other Open Enrollment students are put on a numbered waiting list.

How many kindergarten classes do you expect in the fall?
There will be 5-6 classes of 20 students.

How do you decide which kindergarten class my child will be in?
The kindergarten teachers and I divide the children into classes based on age (birth date), gender, English language development, and special needs (if known). Our goal is to balance classes so that every class is very similar in make-up. Parent requests are not accepted. Our kindergarten teachers work together to help every child meet state and district standards.

Can I help in my child’s class?
Yes!  We have a strong parent volunteer program in all grades and throughout the school.  Parents help in the classrooms, computer lab, library, copy center, and playground. Classroom volunteers in kindergarten start in October after the teachers have established relationships, rules, and routines with the children.

What supplies does my child need?
The school provides basic supplies, but most students also bring supplies from home. A list of suggested supplies can be found on this website and will also be given out at Kindergarten Back to School Night.
