We look forward to meeting with all of the families during our annual Open House on Tuesday, APRIL 24, 2018, from 6:00pm-7:00pm. For Open House, students are encouraged to bring their parents, siblings, grandparents and other significant family/friends to see their classrooms and peek at some of the fun and exciting curriculum they have been working on this year.  Please remember that students are to remain inside the classrooms WITH their parents at all times.  As this night is planned for our current students to showcase all of their hard work and activities, we ask that if you would like to discuss specific issues or concerns about your student, please make an appointment for a conference to do so at a time other than during Open House.

Please note that this day is also a special minimum day for students as they are all dismissed at 1:21pm.

Dear Santa Clara Unified Families and Community:

As you know, just before the February break there was a school shooting at a Parkland, Florida high school. The news of this tragedy and others before it have left our nation and community shaken and heartbroken for the victims and for their families, friends, peers, and communities that mourn their loss.

We want to assure you that our schools are safe places for our students and staff. This is our highest priority.

School Safety

We partner with our local police departments to conduct annual “Run. Hide. Defend” trainings and drills on our campuses so that staff and students are as prepared as we can be in the event the unthinkable happens on one of our campuses. Police departments receive tactical training developed by the FBI and Department of Homeland Security. In addition, our schools conduct annual reviews and updates of School Safety Plans. There are also many health and wellness structures in place, including increased academic and mental health counselors and Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS) programs.

In the event of an emergency on your child’s campus, we enact our School Safety Plans. We secure students and staff, notify law enforcement who take over management of the incident, and notify families. The district will communicate with you through the primary phone and email address listed in your child’s school records. Please make sure you update your child’s school as your contact information changes.

Talking with Students

These unimaginable events are so difficult to understand, let alone explain to students. There are links below to resources to help you navigate conversations within your families and our community.

Walkouts

We are aware of a number of nationwide walkouts being planned. We know you entrust us with your child’s safety. Student safety is our number one concern and we are actively planning for varying scenarios. The walkout gaining the most interest from students is planned for March 14 from 10:00 to 10:17 a.m. and is not a protest, but a remembrance event for the 17 lives lost in the Parkland, Florida shooting as well as a plea for school safety.

Our secondary school students are planning supervised remembrance activities to take place on campus during those 17 minutes for students who wish to participate. Students who do not want to participate, for many varying reasons, may remain in class. We are reminding and expecting students and community members to be open to varying opinions and to keep communication and behavior toward one another peaceful, respectful, and safe. We are not facilitating one message or belief over another, we are creating safe space for all students during a time many wish to explore and exercise their right to free speech through a student-initiated event. We would like all students to remain on campus and not miss their educational day. Those who choose to leave campus or not return to class after the activity are subject to an unexcused absence.

At our elementary schools, we are not discussing the Parkland tragedy or walkout events on a schoolwide level, but will provide safe and supportive space for individual students who want to speak with a trusted adult. Please let your school office or teacher know if your child needs counseling support.

If you have any questions or thoughts you would like to share with us, we would like to hear from you. Please contact Public Information Officer, Jennifer Dericco, at jdericco@scusd.net.

Most sincerely,

Stanley Rose III, Ed.D.

The 22nd Annual Nutcracker performances were spectacular, 'If I do say so myself"!  It was an absolute joy to see the children perform at their very best and, for many, to discover new talents that they didn't know they had!

While we are still relishing in the children's successes, it is a good time to 'set the stage' for next year. The children of many of our key personnel will be graduating from Laurelwood and we would like to see the Nutcracker tradition continue for it's 23rd year. If you have an interest in helping our production, please let us know by replying to this email. Many things happen 'behind the scenes' before the start of school in the Fall.  Without the help of countless parents and many Laurelwood alumni, this production would not be possible. It takes a small army of volunteers to pull this off, and we appreciate your participation!

Please consider purchasing the Nutcracker DVD if you haven't already. It is a very good quality recording and a great keepsake for your children. The goal is to offer it at the lowest cost possible. Laurelwood does not make any profit from the sale of the DVDs, the cost covers time and expenses only to the videographer. The DVD order form is attached. You can also find the DVD Order Form on our school website: http://le-scusd-ca.sc hoolloop.com/nut

Please place your orders directly with the videographer either by check in the mail or through PayPal following the instructions on the form. www.videomagician.com   You can also drop off the form and check at the office.  It takes about 8-10 weeks for the DVD's to be returned to the school.

Dear Laurelwood Families,

The PTA would like to thank all of the generous families that donated to PTA.  During this season of giving, we hope people who didn’t get around to donating yet are inspired to submit a donation today.  The Laurelwood PTA is a non-profit organization and your donation is tax-deductible.  Our mission is to provide enriching activities and events for every student at Laurelwood.  Hopefully, you’ve had a chance to experience some of our fun, family events so far this year like Ice Cream Social, Multicultural Festival and Family Reading Night.  We have more fun planned for the winter and spring, so please join us!  And please consider donating to the PTA as well as contacting your employer about corporate matching.  All donations are voluntary and any amount is appreciated.

Submit a check or donate online at: http://laurelwoodpta.wixsite.com/home/ways-to-give.

Thank you and happy holidays,

Elizabeth Sosa

Laurelwood School The Holiday Wish Drive: Holiday Gifts to Needy

This holiday season, Laurelwood will again participate in The Holiday Wish Drive which sponsored by The Family Giving Tree. The Family Giving Tree is a local nonprofit organization that collects gifts for underprivileged children during the holidays and distributes them to more than 100 local nonprofit agencies. Agencies submit children’s gift wishes and The Family Giving Tree creates wish tags that are then hung on giving trees at local organizations and businesses. Last year The Family Giving Tree distributed gifts for 65,000 youngsters of all ages in the Bay Area—over 100 of these came from Laurelwood! At Laurelwood School, The Family Giving Tree will be set up in the library starting on Tuesday, November 28th.

Students who wish to participate may come to the library and select a wish tag from the tree. Students are then responsible for purchasing a gift and returning it to school, with the wish tag attached by Tuesday, December 12th by 10:00 A.M..

Gifts may be wrapped or unwrapped, unless the wish tag explicitly states that the gift should not be wrapped. Please note that participation in this program is ENTIRELY OPTIONAL. It is being offered as a simple and convenient way to teach our children about the spirit of giving during the holiday season. Because students pick a tag which lists the recipient child’s name, gender, age and wish, this is a unique and personalized opportunity for Laurelwood students to learn about those less fortunate than themselves and develop empathy for others. If you would like your child to participate in The Family Giving Tree, please sign the ATTACHED form and return it to your child’s TEACHER right away.

Dear Laurelwood Dads,

Watch D.O.G.S. will be hosting a "Dads and Desserts" kick off event on Tuesday, November 28th at 6:30pm in the cafeteria.

Laurelwood is proud to have the Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads Of Great Students) Across America program once again.  With this program, you will have the opportunity to spend a day on campus with your child.  Watch D.O.G.S. is a nationally recognized non-profit program that was started in 1998 with the goals of raising the banner of positive fathering, awakening fathers to the values and benefits of committed fathering, helping every school in America to be positively impacted by the committed involvement of fathers and father figures in their children’s lives, reconnecting Dads with their kids, and sowing the seeds of success and impacting academic performance.

Halloween was very fun and the students looked great in their costumes! It sounds like many of you had a wonderful time that evening as well. It'd be very helpful if you kept that tasty Halloween candy for students to enjoy at home instead of sending them for snack recess or lunch.

Thank you for your help with assuring students are fueling their bodies with healthy foods at school for a successful time of learning and socializing.

Each year, each grade level takes two or more field trips, but in order for this to happen, we need your help. A donation of $30 per student will help cover the cost of busing and entrance fees for field trips. Please note that the school donations we are asking for are SEPARATE from the money that the PTA is requesting through their PTA 'Direct Donation' campaign. Because the PTA supports so many wonderful things on campus, they are only able to pay for just ONE of each grade’s field trips per year, and so we must rely on monetary donations made directly to the school to cover all other field trips. Any amount is appreciated and donations are completely voluntary. Parents who wish to make a donation to grade-level field trips may submit cash or a check made payable to “Laurelwood Elementary School” and submit to your child's teacher, along with the bottom portion of the attached form.   We thank you, in advance, for your support to help make field trips possible for Laurelwood students.

Plan to chaperone a field trip and/or help in class?

If you plan to help chaperone any field trips this year, please be sure to fill out and submit a new Volunteer Application Packet for THIS school year.  This process must be completed  EVERY school year.  Per district policy, only those who have been cleared through the application process may accompany field trips. Waiting for a field trip to be announced is too late to turn in your packet to be cleared to attend that trip, so be sure to submit your application right now.  For your convenience, an application for 2017-18 is also attached.

Thank you for your continued support of Laurelwood students!
