The Laurelwood yearbooks are finally HERE! If you have ordered a copy via the pta website or did a cash order in the front office, your child  will receive his/her yearbook from the classroom teacher.

As per Laurelwood tradition, the fifth graders will received their ordered copies first on Monday June 5th and the rest of the grades will get their copies on Tuesday June 6th.

We have a limited surplus of yearbooks for sale. The front office will start selling the yearbooks for $20 each on Tuesday and Wednesday morning (cash sales), on a first come first serve basis.

If and when the front office runs out of the surplus yearbooks, please contact the Laurelwood yearbook printer coordinator, Mrs Cecilia Adachi at <cadachi@sbcglobal.net> during the summer to order extra copies. Please note that these will be at $25 each, since we do not benefit from the large batch rate.

Best,

Asha Wahi

PTA yearbook coordinator.

The 21st Annual Nutcracker performances were spectacular, 'If I do say so myself"!  It was an absolute joy to see the children perform at their very best and, for many, to discover new talents that they didn't know they had!

Please consider purchasing the Nutcracker DVD if you haven't already. It is a very good quality recording and a great keepsake for your children. The goal is to offer it at the lowest cost possible. Laurelwood does not make any profit from the sale of the DVDs, the cost covers time and expenses only to the videographer. The DVD order form is attached. You can also find the DVD Order Form on our school website: http://le-scusd-ca.sc hoolloop.com/nut. Please place your orders directly with the videographer either by check in the mail or through PayPal following the instructions on the form. www.videomagician.com It takes about 8-10 weeks for the DVD's to be returned to the school.

The following information from the district regarding an incident that happened on 11-16-16 will be going out to all families tonight via a "robocall".

Please use the information to have conversations with your children about safe practices, as well as actions they should take if a similar situation ever happens to them.

"This notice is to inform you of a situation that happened earlier today. A Laurelwood Elementary School student walking to school was approached by a stranger jogging down the street who offered her Halloween candy. This student declined the offer, quickly left her location, and went to one of our schools to contact the staff and call the police. There have been no other reports of this nature.

We have scheduled an auto-dialer call and email to all families for this evening with the above details and the following additional message:

Santa Clara Unified and the Santa Clara Police Department value the safety of you and your children and want to take this opportunity to share this suspicious behavior with you.

Please join us in making this a learning opportunity for your child on the importance of reporting suspicious behavior to school staff or another adult. Also talk with your child about safe practices when traveling to and from school and how to respond to strangers who approach them. We have resources available to you on our district website homepage at www.santaclarausd.org.  [see resource]

This is simply an informational call and a reminder to be watchful at all times and inform authorities if anything like this occurs.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Dericco

Public Information Officer

Laurelwood students are currently collecting non perishable food items for for the Second Harvest Food Bank.  Did you know that 1 in 10 people in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties receive food from Second Harvest Food Bank?  Based in Silicon Valley, Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties is one of the largest food banks in the nation. Currently providing food to more than one quarter of a million people every month, Second Harvest is a trusted community-based organization that was founded in 1974. Despite the immense wealth in Silicon Valley, and partly due to the high cost of living, hunger and malnutrition are pervasive.

Please send in food donations (no glass containers or packages that can easily be smashed) to school by Friday, November 18, 2016.

On Halloween (Monday, October 31), all students are encouraged to come to school already dressed in a costume* for the school-wide costume parade first thing in the morning at 8:30am.  All students in costume need to bring a change of “regular” school clothing/shoes to change into following the morning parade.  Please mark the outside of the bag with your child’s name and room number.  Make-up, special hair color/styles MAY be worn to school as long as it is applied at home, prior to arrival.  Students with make up & hair styles/color that is too distracting for learning will be sent to the office following the parade for removal.

Costumes/masks that include fake blood, or any other offensive matter, are NOT permitted.  Also, due to recent events in the area and social media, clown costumes may not be worn to school this year by children nor adults

Parents and others are encouraged to stay after morning drop off to come and watch the school-wide costume parade on the playground at 8:30am. In the case of rain, an alternative (indoor) route for the parade will be in place.

A reminder that for costumes at school, weapons of ANY kind (i.e. play weapons) may NOT be brought to school (this would include items such as swords, knives, guns of any kind, scythes, hatchets, axes,  etc. that may go with costumes).  If in doubt, please leave it at home.

Our school is implementing a biometric finger scanning identification system for our cafeteria meal program in an effort to provide accurate student identification as well as security for our student accounts. This will replace our meal cards and students inputting their pin numbers. We want to eliminate identification errors and clerical errors and provide an easy and accurate way to identify students and be sure no one else can charge items to their accounts. Students will scan their fingers as they come through the cafeteria to account for their meal.

Dear Laurelwood Families:

We wish you a wonderful summer! The 2015-16 school year was terrific and we enjoyed getting to know your children.  Laurelwood has a special place in the community and in the hearts of teachers, parents and students who have worked here and attended here.  We bid farewell to some really fabulous teachers and staff who have dedicated their lives to kids.  Many are moving to new jobs, staying home with new babies or simply changing grade levels!  Congratulations and best of luck to Linda Varveris, Kourtney Ghelfi, Crystal Stafford, Jen Gray, Morgan White, Chris Stern and Jennifer Zeitler in their new school homes! Best to our new mommies - Katy Howser and Amanda Ramon!

Please welcome new staff Laura Jones, Aimee Kalivoda, Jessica Whyte, Felicity Cooper, Virgie Blancas, Joanna Julin, Mark Beasley, Kristen Green, Andrea Vasquez (health) and Arwen Gutierrez! We will do our best to keep our lists up to date as to grade placements and new assignments. Mrs. Stafford will return to us part-time in the fall in the capacity of ELD/Newcomer instructor.

As you may have noticed, our school is undergoing a major Bond funded construction project.  When we re-open in August, all classrooms will have new HVAC (Heating/Air Conditioning), new LED overhead lighting, new carpeting and updated wireless internet routers in every regular building.  With the new wireless internet, we have added chrome book carts using a combination of school site discretionary funding and parent donations for two grade levels: 4th and 5th.  We received a grant for second grade chrome books and our next two grade levels will be funded this school year: Grade 3 and Grade 1.  Please consider our future technology plans when you donate funds to Laurelwood!

Please plan to join our PTA this fall.  Our PTA is extremely supportive of projects and volunteers more hours than I can count.  The PTA has a new website up and running for your reference.  If you wish to volunteer at school, please complete a packet from the office including a copy of your driver’s license and a current TB test (within 4 years).  Once you are processed to volunteer, you will sign in the office and have a badge to wear when you enter the school.  If you are not processed, you must ALWAYS get a sticker from the front office to enter campus.  Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our students and staff safe!

We look forward to another wonderful year in 2016-17!  Residency verification is scheduled for August 2-4.  Please plan accordingly!

Happy Summer!
