Your involvement is so important to the success of our school. Your help, even if it's just a few hours, goes a long way to making sure our school is a great place for our students and families.

The PTO Manager program will help us keep you up to date of what's happening in and around the school. And it's easy for you to let us know how and when you can help.

Become a Volunteer

Make a Difference . . .Become a Volunteer!

Laurelwood PTA invites you to participate in the many events and activities that enrich the learning environment for Laurelwood students. Giving your time, energy and talents will help the school and offer you an opportunity to be an active participant in your child's education.

Four simple steps to becoming a Laurelwood PTA Volunteer:

1.     Fill out the Volunteer Sign Up Sheet for volunteer opportunities that fit your interests and schedule.  Turn it in at the office or bring to the Volunteer Orientation Meeting.

2.     Attend one of the following Volunteer Orientations:

TBD/09 @ 7:00 p.m. in the Laurelwood Cafeteria

TBD/09 @ 8:30 a.m. in the Laurelwood Cafeteria

PTA event chair people will describe each of the PTA events that needs volunteers, explain how you may help, and answer your questions.

You may also get more information at the:

Back to School Ice Cream Social

3. Have a current Mantoux PPD TB Test* on file with the school if you are planning to work in your child's classroom or volunteer for noon yard duty. Test is considered current if taken in the last four years. Copies of tests may be turned in at the office.   Check with your own health professional/insurance regarding obtaining a TB test.

4.   Have photo taken for Volunteer ID badge.

Honorary Service

The Honorary Service Award is given by the PTA to individuals in recognition of outstanding service to children and youth.  A Continuing Service Award may be given to a person who has previously received an Honorary Service Award.

On behalf of each recipient, the Laurelwood PTA contributes to the California State PTA Scholarship Fund.  This revolving fund provides scholarships to deserving students in different fields of education beyond high school.

Names of candidates for the award, along with lists of current and past contributions, are submitted each April.  Nomination forms are available in the school office and are published in Tiger Tales.  Nominations for the Honorary Service Award are reviewed by a committee, which will select the awardees.

Parent Coffees

One Wednesday per month the PTA will be hosting a Blue Day Coffee at 8:15am.  Please stop by the cafeteria for a cup of coffee and some goodies and spend some time mingling with other Laurelwood parents.  Everyone is welcome!

In the spirit of "Laurelwood Goes Green", we invite you to bring a reusable coffee mug to reduce our waste of disposable cups.

Our Blue Day Coffees for the 2009-2010 School Year will be held on:

  • September 30
  • October 28
  • November 18
  • December 16
  • January 27
  • February 24

Laurelwood is fortunate to have an active and energetic Parent Teacher Association (PTA).  The PTA hosts a variety of events throughout the school year including an Ice Cream Social, Math Night, Literacy Night, Family Dance and Multicultural Festival.  In addition, the PTA partially funds classroom and grade level field trips.

To support all of these fun and important activities, PTA’s main fundraiser is a Walk-a-thon/Silent Auction at the end of September.  Smaller fundraisers such as Dining for Dollars and Box Tops for Education supplement the general fund.

Two PTA fundraisers specifically benefit certain areas of learning at Laurelwood:

Book Fair income is donated directly to school and individual classroom

libraries and  e-scrip benefits technology (i.e., computer lab equipment, mobile laptops, software, etc.)

PTA Meeting Dates

Most Laurelwood PTA meetings are generally held on the third Tuesday of each month, at 7:00pm, in the Staff Lounge of the Laurelwood campus, with a few exceptions.
You are welcome to join the board meetings, hear and participate in the discussion, volunteer to help as needed, however only Board Members are able to vote.  All Laurelwood PTA members are able to vote at General Association Meetings.

Please contact the current PTA President, Leslie Kloes, with questions regarding PTA meetings.

PTA Sponsored Sales

Laurelwood t-shirts and sweatshirts are sold each fall.

The PTA School Store offers school supplies such as paper, folders and art supplies.  We are also offering “gently used” Laurelwood apparel.  Please donate your clean, outgrown (but still-in-good-condition) t-shirts and sweatshirts.  The School Store is open once per month; items are sold from tables near the main office.

A week-long Book Fair in the fall helps supply both classroom libraries and the school library with new books.

School yearbooks are sold each spring and delivered to students during the last week of school.  Please pre-order your yearbooks as only a limited supply is available.

I'd like to help Laurelwood...whom do I contact?

Dear Laurelwood Parents,

As you know, our two largest fundraisers of the school year--the Walk-a-thon and Silent Auction--will be held on Friday, September 25.  Many of you have graciously offered to support these events but aren't sure where to go for more information.  Soon you will be receiving in your child's Thursday envelope information regarding both events.  These fliers will explain how your child can secure and collect pledges for the laps he or she walks at the Walk-a-thon.  They will also explain how parents can donate items to the Silent Auction.  In the meantime, I would like to provide you with the contact information for our fabulous volunteers in case you have any questions.

For Walk-a-thon t-shirt sponsorships, please contact Linda Gentry at lmgentry@comcast.net

For business donations to the Silent Auction, please contact Robert Ma at robertma.9@gmail.com

For parent donations to the Silent Auction, please contact Debbie Fortino at dndfortino@aol.com

In addition to monetary and in-kind contributions, we will be asking for your donation of time as well.  If each family could work just one shift at the Walk-a-thon or Silent Auction, we will ALL be able to enjoy and participate in our event on September 25.  Information about volunteer opportunities is coming soon, so stay tuned...and don't forget to update your child's classroom and grade level information in PTO Manager so that we can target our communication appropriately.

Thank you for your support of our school; the success of our fundraiser depends on it.

Warmest regards,
Leslie Kloes
President,
